The Challenge 🧐

What does it take to found—and peacefully sustain—a republic with no kings, no central rulers, and no empire? At the Bundesbrief Museum, we examined how a small alliance of alpine communities crafted the 1291 Federal Charter, forming a confederation that has endured for over 700 years.

Our Experience 🇨🇭

The Bundesbrief Museum doesn’t feel like a typical exhibit—it feels like a vault. Students entered a dim, protected space where the original 1291 Federal Charter and related documents are preserved and displayed. We moved carefully, reading the texts, studying the seals, and tracing how a handwritten agreement became the foundation of Swiss federalism. Along the way, students engaged in meaningful conversations with the museum’s volunteer guides—local citizens deeply invested in the legacy of the confederation.

The Takeaway 💡

Standing in front of the original Bundesbrief while speaking with those who have lived its legacy brought history into the present. Students left not just with facts about 1291, but with a deeper understanding of how cooperation across language, geography, and culture can shape a nation. In a country where regions still differ widely, the Swiss commitment to unity through mutual respect and shared purpose stood out—and students began to appreciate how setting aside smaller differences can sustain something much larger. It’s a lesson the Swiss are proud of—and rightfully so.
